OT: Is Al Michaels an idiot

I agree...if Dog actually was still watching the game at that point that's something that'd be right up his alley to get on Michaels for.

Reminds me of Marv Albert who would invariably **** up at least one foul call per game and when the ref announced the foul he would always say

" Oh the call was changed or the ref changed his mind"

No loser, you got it wrong. There must be some broadcasting school that teaches the students to never admit you made a mistake.

I wasn't paying attention that closely when Al started going off about this but here's an example of how the ref would know they were a few inches short after the five yard penalty:

If the team needs to get to exactly say, the 30 yard line, to get a first down (like they would after a touchback), and the ball was a few inches shy of the 25 yard line before the penalty, the ref would know that they would be a few inches short after the penalty.

I don't think this was the exact case last night, but it may have been similar where the ref knew from the yard markers that they'd have to get to a specific yard line to achieve a first down.

I did not hear Michaels explanation...see Art's answer though, I'm sure it went something like that. I do usually like Al-beeno though.
