I'm a baseball fan, but I doubt that Mike and Chris do much football talk in the middle of the summer. It wouldn't hurt them to comment on other games or teams around the NFL. After all it is a national sport. Plus they could have Giants and Cowboy guests on, from present and past. Or God forbid they could talk about basketball or hockey. I think a little baseball talk this time of year is ok, but I think they do do too much of it. They need to get a little more creative in producing their show to include more variety.

How many times can you talk about"lets go over that 3rd and 4 play".. They break down like every play, Benigno too. Who cares. It's 1 game. They disect the game for
2 days and then begin to talk about the upcoming game. "Hey mike why did Tiki go up the middle when he had a hole on the right side. You're right dog lets talk about that for 3 days."......

A bad job on my part

I don't mind hot stove talk that much. I just hate that 95% of the callers with trade ideas are shut down by the Dynamic Duo almost before the caller finishes their thought.
Sure if its a trade for Johan Santana for 2 Yankee bat boys I can see it. But the station is FOR the fans. And who's to say that Jarvis in Paramus doesn't have a better insight than Mike & Chris do as far as what the Yanks & Mets do.
It's not like they've endeared themselves to the teams' General Managers over the years.

This would be a good week for some interviews of old players and coaches.
But I get a sense that maybe they've burned a few bridges over the years.
Well, maybe Dog not so much Mike.

I would agree that they shut down alot of people with trade ideas, but I would have to say that most of the callers with trade ideas are just ridiculous. First off I love the caller that says I have 5 trade ideas or okay I have a 7 team trade for how the Yankees can get Santana. Most of the times the trades are stupid, and they should not be on the air anyway.

There are shows where the hosts give the caller long leashes with the trade ideas and it usually gets ridiculous after a while...."Jody do you think we can get Garnett from the T-Wolves in exchange for Crawford and a future second rounder"

If it's true, i think it's hypocritical of Glavine as a vocal union leader to give Atlanta a deep hometown discount when the union disallowed (i know it wasn't Glavine's decision) Arod any room to reduce his contract in order to go to Boston.

I don't doubt, since it seemed Glavine could be going either way...I hope its not true because the Mets don't need to lose a pitcher.

Glavine threw 198 innings won 15 games and had an ERA around 3.80 although he did lose that game to St.Louis, he had a 1.59 ERA in the playoffs. The Mets have taken a hit or two the last few days with losing Bradford and if this is true losing Glavine, but I am willing to see what Minaya has up his sleeve, he has earned the benefit.

That might be true, but let's be honest about something. Up until last week, these two clowns would begin their show talking hot stove, while ignoring a huge win by the Jets against New England.

MONDAY MORNING AND I HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT YANKEES/METS?

JESUS H CHRIST.

One of the biggest wins in the Jets recent history, especially for a 35 year old head coach and a team on the rebuild, and they're relegated to five minutes of lip service at 3:00pm?

I'm sorry, but that is inexcusable. This is football season and the *** clowns have been far to guilty of this.

When the Yankees and Red Sox square off, I expect them to take the lead story, unless something absolutely bizarre happens, but please, don't be an *** and place my team on the backburner for some news regarding a Japanese pitcher.

The fact is that Mike and Chris do this **** far too often. They ignore entire legions of sports fans by failing to discuss sports that are important to NYC. They've grown lazy, cynical and have become spoiled.

I agree with you completely FL. However, the bottom line is that people continue to support this mediocrity by turning them in on a daily basis and maintaining their ratings. If more people strenously objected to baseball content being discussed regularly, especially during football Mondays, they'd turn the station off or change the dial. This doesn't seem to be happening. In other words, either a) the listenership continues to tolerate mediocrity, or b) the masses seem to enjoy baseball being discussed 365 friggin days out of the year. All I can tell you is that in any other sport, football, basketball, hockey, if there is a free agent signing during the offseason (which coincides with baseball's on season) there would be nary a mention, nor would there be calls fielded by listeners. As an avid NFL and NBA fan, I reject this format. That's why I can't listen to the station any longer. Further patronage by listeners who object to this format only promulgates their pro-baseball agenda.

Yeah, I listened about 3 weeks ago, and Russo was solo, and it was actually entertaining. It was when Auerbach died, and there was a former NBA referee on talking about some games he called. To me, that's good radio. I switched off a little while later, because I had to leave my computer. I've tried to turn it back on a few times without success. I will say this, though: the minute a mention of baseball is made, I will cancel out my windows media player. I don't think the sport deserves to be followed after the 1994 players strike, and the current economic structure which benefits only teams where there is an interest in the game (i.e. NY, Boston and St Louis).

Yeah, but NY is in the minority, because in most other local sports radio markets, football is topic du jour this time of year Monday thru Friday. And that's why baseball teams that play in NY can self-sustain talent inflow year in and year out, because of the extra revenue streams necessasry to pay players without a salary cap. From a M&MD standpoint, I've often mused if their baseball obsession is representative of the NY public wanting to hear the sport discussed perpetually, or, if it is a more self-serving programming choice they make to do so. If the ratings are an indicator, then my money is on the former.

Your arguments seem to be jumping all over the place with you hatred for baseball.

I am sure others on this board will remember the exchange but there was a really good discussion about 2 1/2 months ago with Mike and the Maddog and Buster Ohlney(I am pretty sure it was Buster). And basically Buster was blowing this whole its only the major revenue teams that win in baseball and the poor little guy cant win, out of the water with some interesting statistics.

I believe he had said that for example the Royals receive anywhere from 25-30 million dollars alone from Revenue sharing(alot of that is George's money unquestionably), but they choose not to spend it and to pocket it. Whereas teams like the Twins have really used Revenue sharing wisely have increased their payroll and have become competitors every year.

It was actually a very interesting topic

I think people still listen because they've been listening since they were teenagers and it's a habit formed. Plus ESPN is crap for the most part. I agree with the ESPN analysis. I flipped on Michael Kay sometime around 5:30 yesterday because I do give him a shot occasionally....He was doing a remote from Lord & Taylor(seriously) he was on air telling a girl who was shopping to come over to him because she was hot and hot girls can do whatever they want, and then he started talking about how they had gotten a free gift bag from Lord & Taylor but Joey Salvia was not going to use the underwear because he goes commando it was embarissingly pathetic...Maybe this is the reason why Mike and the Maddog don't have to be on top of their game to still pull big ratings.

Baseball-centric coverage isn't limited to FAN and M&MD.

1050 will have reports twice a day next week from the winter meetings with John Heyman (and the ESPN stable of Stark, Gammons, Olney, etc.).

Also, my Sports Weekly newspaper last week announced that they were bowing to reader requests to drop NASCAR from the weekly publication and INCREASE their baseball and football coverage.

I'm a huge Devil and Steeler fan, but baseball will always be my #1 sport (of course, as a Pirate fan, I don't have to worry about the pennant race much past Easter each season). I enjoy the talk about baseball, but wouldn't mind if there was an increase of other sports now and then. One advantage to Mike & Mike is that as a national show, they do tend to chase the big story regardless of sport, while M&MD will barely reach to explore sports that are not in their wheelhouse; of course, their attempts at discussing sports on their own (hockey, for example) are almost painfully uncomfortable to listen to as a fan. They are better off not talking about it at all than giving it a once over with little-to-know insight of the topic.

If I am going to hear any educated hockey talk on the radio, I'll wait until LaGreca is on the air.

The Padres are closing in on a major off-season coup, nearing an agreement with free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal, which would be a significant blow to the Dodgers, the Padres' NL West rival, will be for either one or two years, or possibly one year with a club option

Icelanders
12-04-2006, 08:58 PM
If it is true not a bad move by the padres. They play in a pitchers park so that should be too Maddux's advantage. The crazy thing is that the Padres may even get a steal. Even a .500 pitcher is getting 8-9 million a year with these crazy salaries.

The Dodgers have not had the greatest offseason but that could all change this week
