Sims and Coleman Remembrances

I was reminded of this classic exchange on Ed and Dave's show... After a fifteen minute interview with a NASCAR driver on the Friday before the Daytona 500, with both guys pretending to A) Know what they were talking about and B) Seem interested. Sims asks Coleman: "So are you gonna watch the race?" Ed: "I can't watch that - they just go around and around..."

I remember the live remote from opening day at Yankee Stadium when a pidgeon pooped on Dave's head.

Cole-man and the Soul Man!

Meanwhile, Sims had about as much soul as a piece of wheat bread.

I've tried to forget these two. They were awful.

I remember Dave Sims fromt he early Imus 66 Ennnnnbc days. I've always liked him and Ed Coleman as well. Nice guys.

Dave always seemed well rounded to me. Could talk in depth about boxing, baseball, etc.

Good call on the rug, though. Brutal, just brutal.

Dave Sims used to be on 66 WNBC in the evenings. I used to like his show I guess because it was sports talk and that was new to me. The only competition at the time was Art Rust Jr. on WABC 770,who was the first person in NY I ever heard doing sports talk radio. I used to switch back between them. I used to like Sims better. I think Breen used to fill in once in a while for Sims also. Then WFAN debuted on 1050 AM and when it moved over to 660, Sims fit right in and eventually got the 10-1 gig with Ed Coleman.

EDIT : Fixed Art Rust's name. :-)

That's Arthur George RUST Jr. And you, my friend, are a racist.

Fixed it ! :-)

I hope that last line was a joke, I didn't see a smiley face. Was that a line good old Art used? I forget.

Who remembers Friday's football picks?
Sims and/or Coleman: "Let's go to Dan from Newark" "What d'ya got?..."
Caller: "Philadelphia"
Sims and/or Coleman: "Ahh the Eagles"
Caller: "Dallas"
Sims and/or Coleman: "COWBOYS!"
Caller: "Giants"
Sims and/or Coleman: "Ahh... going with the Jints..."
Sims and/or Coleman: "Get back to us next week and let us know how you did..."
Next Step: Repeat over and over and over and over...

Of course it was a joke. I'm just not a big smiley guy. 8)

It's funny, because I always thought it was Art Russ also. It never sounded like he pronounced the "t" when saying his name. I guess I finally saw his name in print a few times, and I think towards the end of his ABC days he started enunciating the "t" more.

And yes, that was one of Art's favorite lines. For example, a caller may have argued that Bird was better than Magic. I wouldn't share that opinion, but there were probably many rational hoops fans that may have had that opinion. Anyway, Art would respond to such a notion with his thoughts, and then close with his patented "..and you, my friend, are a racist" line, before hanging up on the guy.

I remember way back, before Dave Sims, there used to be a guy on WNBC at night, I think it was Jack Spector? His intro was a ten count of a boxing bell.

Wondering if anyone remembers him, b/c those are my first sports radio memories, and I am 32, so I know I was young, just wondering what years he was on.

Nah, don't remember that. Jack Spector was on WNBC, but don't think he was a sports host.

Yeah, he was (briefly) a sports show host. Though ill-equipped to be one, he was one anyway. This was in the dying days of WNBC, soon before the flip to WFAN. There is a classic Howard Stern call-in to Jack Spector's sports show where Howard (with a disguised voice) speaks to "Jake", as Spector would sometimes call himself. Great stuff where Jack tries to remain patient with the feeble caller. Ahh, what memories...

Another old timer I see ! Thanks for the clarification and humorous antidote. :-)
