Bob Shrum, who ran one of the worst campaigns in modern times was on Meet the Press this Sunday with Tim Russert. Can someone explain to me why this guy is talking about politics? Does anyone know the last election he has won? It is akin to all of the pundits coming on television Wednesday morning to tell us why Clinton won in Texas and Ohio after they all predicted she would lose.
It is just another illustration of how the Washington echo chamber or chattering class is full of bloviating charlatans. After running John Kerry’s 2004 Presidential disaster campaign you would think this guy would not have a job in Washington, yet there he is, all over MSNBC teaching us political strategy.
It reminds me of one of the Kerry moments of 2004. During July and early August, President Bush had been challenging John Kerry to answer “knowing everything he knows now would Senator Kerry still vote to authorize the Iraq war”. Anyone with any political savvy knew this was a classic Rovian trap. It was simply a question Kerry could not answer. If he said yes he was validating Bush’s decision to go to war, if he said no he was a flip flopper.
This is what Kerry said on a stop in front of the Grand Canyon:
In response, Kerry, distinguishing between invading Iraq and authorizing the action said, ”Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it was the right authority for a president to have.” Kerry has said the decision to invade rested with the president.
Idiot move of all time. All Kerry had to do was say was, “Why is George Bush asking me how I would have voted if I could go back in time, he is the President of the United States, why does he need my advice, the Iraq war is Bush’s war, the buck stops with the President, he made the final decision to go to war, if he is having second thoughts about it then he needs to think about whether he deserves another four years as President.”
A skilled politician would have turned that question around on Bush the minute he introduced it into his stump speeches.
Yet the architect of Kerry’s campaign, Bob Shrum, is still getting paid to give political advice on television, what a country.
